Hugo Crosthwaite
Wall Drawing and Deconstruction
December 2009 - January 2010

Street View of Drawing in Progress, 25CPW, NYC, 2009 (0:24)

Continuing with the process of constructing and then deconstructing his monumental wall drawings, Crosthwaite's work in the window at 25CPW references the people and the place he is working.

The 8' x 12' charcoal on panel is a spontaneously rendered amalgamation of images, done against the backdrop of the Upper West Side during the height of holiday shopping season. Part 1950s pulp disaster movie poster and part contemporary commercial advertising, this chaotic collision - a disaster scene of commercial frenzy - references the similarities between both genres.

The drawing's imagery was eliminated in stages, each stage creating a new narrative comment. This piece was completed on January 17, 2010.
