SANTA MONICA MUSEUM OF ART presents
MCASD's Strange New World & Incognito 2007

Santa Monica Museum of Art
Bergamont Station G1
2525 Michigan Avenue
Santa Monica CA 90404

Santa Monica Museum of Art, located in the historic Bergamont Train Station, is part of a unique and dynamic arts complex on the West Side of Los Angeles. SMMoA will be exhibiting an abbreviated version of the Museum of Contemporary Art-San Diego's exhibition Extraño Nuevo Mundo/Strange New World: Art and Design from Tijuana, opening Friday night, January 12.

Extraño Nuevo Mundo is the first major traveling exhibition to study and celebrate the unique, interdisciplinary art scene in Tijuana. The exhibition explores the powerful creative energy that has molded Tijuana, home of the most heavily traversed international border in the world. Lying almost directly adjacent to San Diego, these two cities form a metropolitan region with a population exceeding 5 million people. Tijuana is a city built upon the the dynamics of globalization, media and issues of migration and identity.

Santa Monica Museum of Art has curated down MCASD's exhibition, to create an abbreviated version of the show, featuring the most important contemporary artists, architects, designers and filmmakers from Baja California. The city of Tijuana is at the root of each work included in this exhibition. The artists response to the city's rapid grown and haphazard expansion can be seen in the thought provoking and energetic artworks included in SMMoA's presentation of Extraño Nuevo Mundo.

Hugo Crosthwaite's Linea - Escaparates de Tijuana 1-4 will be included in the Santa Monica Museum of Art's presentation of Extraño Nuevo Mundo. Linea, a 4-panel cityscape measuring 2 x 16 feet, was completed in graphite and charcoal on wood panel. In this work, Crosthwaite has depicted the urban landscape constructs of the colonias with austere right angles and forceful straight lines, all the while, infusing romantically human, political and sensual nuances. This drawing was created by Crosthwaite as an investigation of and contemplation about the everyday and the mundane in a city where he grew up. The panoramic drawing does not depict actual locations in Tijuana but rather, is a personal interpretation and response to the city of Tijuana.

Angeles Moreno has developed an interactive website in conjunction with Extraño Nuevo Mundo. The website features the music of Nortec Collective as well as image of many works included in the exhibition.

On April 28 Santa Monica Museum of Art will be presenting Incognito 2007. This will be the third version of the museum's fundraiser. Incognito features artworks by local, national and international contemporary artists. Each artist creates an 8 x 10 inch artwork, signed on the reverse. Every piece will be for sale for $250 and the identity of the artist will remain concealed until after purchase. Incognito 2005 features 701 works by 469 artists including: Eleanor Antin, Charles Arnoldi, John Baldassari, Gary Baseman, Harry Gamboa Jr., Gronk, Salómon Huerta, Sol LeWitt, Yoko Ono, Rachel Rosenthal, Ed Ruscha and Kehinde Wiley among others.

Hugo Crosthwaite was invited to participate in Incognito 2007, quickly becoming a must-attend contemporary art event in Southern California. For more information on the event, please contact the Santa Monica Museum of Art.
