Two Major Drawings by Hugo Crosthwaite Acquired by San Diego Museums

We are pleased to announce that both the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (MCASD) have purchased major pieces by Hugo Crosthwaite. The Collections Committee at MCASD met last month and voted to proceed with the accessioning of Linea - Escaparates de Tijuana 1-4 / Line - Tijuana Cityscapes 1-4 into their permanent collection. This four-panel, 24 x 192 inch drawing will be included in Strange New World: Art and Design from Tijuana/Extraño Nuevo Mundo, Arte y Diseño desde Tijuana. The exhibition will premier in Washington DC at the Mexican Cultural Center in February 2006 before it opens in at MCASD's downtown location in May 2006.

Derrick Cartwright, Director of SDMA, has been working with ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries to purchase the four-panel, 96 x 96 inch piece, entitled Bartolomé. Catholic tradition tells the story of Saint Bartholomew preaching in the Middle East where he suffered a terrible martyrdom of being flayed alive and crucified. In Bartolomé, Hugo Crosthwaite references both the martyrdom of the Catholic Saint as well as the torture of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib. Bartolomé will be included in SDMA's upcoming exhibition, "Paper Traces: Latin American Prints and Drawings from the Collection at SDMA" opening in the Fall of 2006.
