After opening in Washington DC in February of this year, Strange New World: Art and Design from Tijuana/Extraño Nuevo Mundo: Arte y Diseño desde Tijuana has traveled back to West Coast, where it will be exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego's Downtown and La Jolla galleries, beginning May 20, 2006 and running through Labor Day weekend.

Hugo Crosthwaite's Linea-Escaparetes de Tijuana 1-4 (2003) along with works by other well-known artists including: Tania Candiani, Yvonne Venegas, Einar and Jamex de la Torre, Sergio de la Torre, Marcos Ramírez ERRE, and Jamie Ruiz Otis are included in this exhibition.

Extraño Nuevo Mundo was extremely well received at Washington DC's Cultural Institute of Mexico. We are pleased to note that several exhibition reviews singled out Hugo Crosthwaite's 16-foot Tijuana cityscape drawing as being a highlight in the show. In a review entitled, Neighborhood Art Exhibits Not to Miss, Anthony Harvey writes, "Hugo Crosthwaite's four-panel paintings hanging side-by-side simply called The Border Tijuana are stunning cityscapes of dense graphite and charcoal on wood; these paintings (or drawings) are beautifully and emotionally compelling."

While the Cultural Institute of Mexico's version of Extraño Nuevo Mundo included works by 32 artists, MCASD will be showing work by 41 artists between their Downtown and La Jolla locations. A handful of artists' works created between 1970 and 1990 will be shown in La Jolla - in an effort to create a historical perspective for the more contemporary works on exhibition at MCASD's Downtown campus.

In celebration of MCASD's exhibition of contemporary artists from Baja California, David Zapf Gallery will be featuring works by Hugo Crosthwaite and other artists included in the museum exhibition. David Zapf Gallery is located in Downtown San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood. Please contact us for additional information.
